The assignment for Virginia Commonwealth University fashion students: design an abaya, an enveloping cloak worn by Muslim women, that is stylish yet acceptable in Arab countries. The results: elaborately beaded designs, a flamenco-influenced abaya, a punk rock abaya — and perhaps a better understanding of cultural norms in the Persian Gulf nation of Qatar, where the university has had a campus for 10 years.

Once one moves beyond the terminology, however, there’s no disputing the fact our islamic clothing or muslim clothes are simply beautiful and unique.This djellaba features rectangular-shaped silk stripes encasing traditional Moroccan knotted buttons. This thin fabric has a loose weave that really lets the garment breathe.It is a great all-season fabric that will do especially well in warmer climates, where fabric breathability is key in keeping cool.
